How I am going to save Christmas…
Holidays can be stressful. Anything can be stressful, really, if you allow it. But, I think holidays have a particular knack for being deemed stressful because there is so much riding on them – family traditions, an ideal plan for how they are supposed to play out, pressure to have that famous Norman Rockwell scene in your very own dining room.
Here is a glimpse into my Christmas past….
Something that I’ve been struggling with in the past few years is a shift in how my family celebrates Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve is kind of a big thing for Italian American families , traditionally speaking of course. I have very fond memories of spending hours upon hours at my grandparent’s home, eating, playing games, opening presents, watching movies, eating, and …eating some more. It was, and still is, my favorite holiday. There was always Christmas music, eggnog (which I never drank), and good cheer. At least, that is what I saw through my child eyes.
My grandparents legitimately loved having everyone around, and that is what made the holiday special. Their love and happiness filled their home, and made for some really special childhood memories.
Christmas has always been my favorite holiday, but it’s really Christmas Eve that means the most to me. For this reason, I’ve struggled with losing the magic of that night as I’ve grown into an adult. It started with having to –gasp – work on this sacred holiday. What??? People go to work on CHRISTMAS EVE???
Then, there was the sharing of holidays.
Lucky for me, my husband’s family isn’t as prone to a big celebration on Christmas Eve, so I don’t have to share –but that didn’t stop me from crying the first time I had to leave Christmas with my family to visit his. (Love you hubby and in-laws! Nothing personal!)
Then there were changes in my own family dynamic that just left Christmas Eve not quite the same. Although, I’m blessed to say that my mother’s parents are both still with us – and they are really the epicenter of what Christmas Eve has always meant to me.
So much rides on your childhood memories that you forget that the ‘magic’ is something you can create and grow for yourself. Especially when you have children of your own – they are counting on you to provide the opportunity for memory making.
So, I’m going to look back fondly on my Christmas Eve memories at my grandparent’s house, and I’m going to work to provide those same types of memories for my own children.
I’d like to say thank Patience Brewster for inspiring me to share my thoughts on the holiday season. Check out their beautiful Christmas ornaments !
What are some of your favorite holiday
traditions?
